This concert is a partnership, a long standing, but only an occasional, where the Grainger Wind Symphony conducted by Music Director Roland Yeung was invited to perform in the Music Auditorium with selected Monash Musicians. We are part of an inspiring day dedicated entirely to the French Horn! The Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music at Monash University warmly welcomes school students, tertiary horn players, and horn enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels to participate. The concert, starting at 6pm features the music of Kazimierz Machala – his horn concerto in three movements, and Celtic Scents for Symphonic Band, a suite of seven movements. The horn soloist is Peter Luff, a member of staff at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and plays in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Kazimierz Machala current lives in USA, but served as principal horn of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for 15 years. We welcome Kaz back to Australia for Horn Day and our concert.

Former principal horn of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the first recipient of a doctorate in the instrument at Juilliard, Polish-born teacher, player and composer Kazimierz Machala gives us a concerto for his instrument. This work received its premiere on February 19th, 2011 by the University of Maryland Wind Orchestra. From Wind Repertory Project

Celtic Scents is an amazing suite of wonderful musical scents (wildflowers, herbs, and trees) unified by the brilliant imagination of world-renowned teacher, performer and composer Kazimierz Machala, and the familiar sounds of Celtic folk music. This completely original work of seven movements is reminiscent of Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy, including a very creative and enjoyable harmonic palette.

The composition requires a full wind band and takes advantage of colorful orchestration to link each movement more closely to the scent it represents. While Machala composed Celtic Scents originally for orchestra, he has carefully and artistically re-orchestrated the work for the modern wind band. Celtic Scents will best suit performances by collegiate and professional wind bands around the world due to the advanced technical and musical requirements. There is absolutely no doubt that audiences and performers will enjoy their time spent with this joyful and engaging composition. From the publisher Carl Fisher

Kazimierz was invited by Monash University Music School to be a feature clinician at the Community Horn Day on the same day as the concert we are giving featuring just his music. He will attend some rehearsals and will be our guest at the concert.

A native of Poland, Kazimierz Machala is an active performer, composer, and teacher. He studied horn at the Janacek Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in the Czech Republic. Machala, who was the first horn player in Juilliard’s history to receive the Doctor of Musical Arts degree, received third prize at the 1974 International Music Competition for Woodwinds and Brass in Prague. During 1989-2009 he taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and currently is the Professor Emeritus of Horn.
