Chen Yi’s Spring Festival is a lively musical tribute to the 15-day Chinese New Year celebration. The composition takes inspiration from a southern Chinese folk piece, Lion Playing Ball, and employs the Golden Section, based on the phi ratio, to create a harmonious structure. Nested Golden Sections add rhythmic complexity, enhancing the festive atmosphere. The use of gongs and cymbals intensifies the celebratory mood, while crisp articulation, rhythmic syncopation, and asymmetrical phrasing contribute to the spirited portrayal of this joyous occasion. Through skillful integration of mathematics and music, Chen Yi has created an exciting and exuberant musical experience.
