Working With Children Check and Child Safety for all GWS members

All members of The Grainger Wind Symphony are to hold a current Working With Children Check (or equivalent).

This is a new policy for all members and was implemented for the first time at the beginning of 2018. It is part of our Child Safety Policy.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK

  • The new State Government of Victoria Legislation requires all people working with children must have a current Working With Children Check. This includes all players who will play in a concert with school students, in particular at any performance in a school. We usually do one or two concert with school students.
  • “The WWC Check is a legal requirement for all individuals engaging in paid or voluntary child-related work in a relevant occupational category, as defined by the Working with Children Act 2005.”
  • There are some exemptions. For example teachers who have VIT Registration. Please note that just having a Police Check does not exempt you.
  • All players performing with school students are required to have a current Working with Children Check. Go on line to their website and work through each page of information
  • click here to go to the Working With Children Victoria website.
  • Apply for a Check online
  • Your work with GWS is as a volunteer.
  • For your Organisation Details list “The Grainger Wind Symphony, 86 Rostrevor Parade, Mont Albert North VIC 3129”, ph 03 9890 5646.
  • The organisational field for GWS is “Clubs, associations or movements of a cultural, recreational or sporting nature”.
  • An Application Summary will be sent to you via email. Please cc me a copy.
  • Take with this an Australia Post outlet and submit as instructed
  • When approved, the Department of Justice will send us a copy of both sides your card.
  • The card is valid for five years and is free for Volunteers. Please renew before expiry.
  • This must be completed at joining or rejoining The GWS.

ALREADY HAVE A WWCC?

  • Those who already have a Working With Children (or equivalent) must add “The Grainger Wind Symphony, 86 Rostrevor Parade, Mont Albert North VIC 3129”, ph. 03 9890 5646 to their list of Organisations on-line.
  • The organisational field for GWS is “Clubs, associations or movements of a cultural, recreational or sporting nature”.
  • When approved the Department of Justice will send GWS a copy of both sides of your card.
  • This must be completed at joining or rejoining The GWS.

IF YOU HAVE A VIT EXEMPTION

  • “If you are currently registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), you are exempt from the Working with Children (WWC) Check. This is because registered teachers are subject to extensive criminal history screening and weekly monitoring similar to the WWC Check. In addition to this, registration is only granted by the VIT to teachers who are appropriately qualified and assessed by the VIT as ‘suitable to teach’.” from the Working With Children website.
  • Those who already have an Exemption for a Working With Children Check must check the WWCC website
  • supply a photocopy of a current VIT card, both sides, and
  • give to the Personnel Manager, Secretary or email to secretary@graingerwindsymphony.asn.au
  • This must be completed at joining or rejoining The GWS.
  • This must be repeated once the VIT Registration expires on 30th September each year.
  • Other exemptions from the Check are Police Officers, Interstate visitors (with some conditions).

If there are any questions about the WWCC, probably the best place to go is the WWC website.

If there are any questions about WWCC at GWS, please direct them to Roland Yeung music.director@graingerwindsymphony.asn.au or 0432 445577.

PERFORMING IN SCHOOLS AND THE CHILD SAFETY CODE OF CONDUCT

Each school has their own Child Safety Code of Conduct. They are typical of what all schools are implementing for all visitors to the school including trade persons. If we perform at a school, we will be asked to provide them with WWCC for all GWS members involved and we will be asked to provide each GWS member with their school’s Child Safety Code of Conduct.

Click here to download the Our Lady of Sion College Child Safety Code of Conduct. All members who played in the 27th May 2018 concert also had to sign on arrival that they have received a copy. This is usual procedure for all visitors to the school.
