PRE-CONCERT TALK
Dr Sarah Kirby is giving a pre-concert talk about Percy Grainger at 6.15pm in room L106 in the Music School. Dr Kirby is a Research Fellow at the Grainger Museum, University of Melbourne. She published a new book “Inventing Percy Grainger” published in February this year. Her topic is as follows.
“Many know of Australian composer Percy Grainger as an eccentric. But how did this image come to be the dominant one in the public imagination? Grainger was a famous self-promoter, to the extent that he built an autobiographical museum to control the way he’d be remembered. This talk traces the ways Grainger was represented in the press during his lifetime, through newspaper and magazine articles, to reveal how the character of the ‘eccentric’ was developed and actively curated by both journalists and Grainger himself.”
